Come on in!

Okay, guys, this is where we start. Whoopty doo! 'Bout as elegant as it gets, isn't it? There's so much I want to do: podcasting, polls, lists of useful links and fun links for writers...but I have to say, for a first day, this isn't bad at all.

It would be nice if we all started out by introducing ourselves and maybe telling something about what we plan to work on during MOTM, so I'll start. I'm Elizabeth more (call me Liz, Lizzie, or Lizbeth...but never Eliza :)). You can read more about me on my profile if you're really super interested; I'll make this short. I've been writing for six years now, ever since I realized I wanted writing to be my life when I was twelve. My main genre is fantasy, but I've done historical fiction, Christian fiction, some contemporary short stories geared toward young adults, recently dabbled with a tiny bit of sci fi, and continue to produce a slow but steady stream of poetry and songs in many genres. I did LOTR fanfiction once upon a time, and am currently playing with Doctor Who now and then...only the coolest sci fi show ever. Tolkien's work first inspired me to write, and though I no longer am so conceited as to think I can write an epic of that scope and brilliance, I love what I do and continue to try to improve.

My MOTM project is a reincarnated resurrection of the ghost of my (disastrous and crappy) NaNoWriMo story from last year, most of which got eaten by my evil computer when I was about half finished. (Back up your work. Do it. Trust me! It's not fun to lose it!) It's called Faery Blood, and it's aboutt a human girl who falls in love with an immortal half faery who was exchanged for a human changeling in his infancy, and has grown up among humans. I'll go into more detail later; right now I'm tired and have other things I need to attend to.

So...come on in, enjoy yourselves! Yea!

Posting Rules

Be appropriate. No profanity, no discussion of a graphic or explicit nature, and no obnoxious humor. Our age line here is thirteen; don’t say anything you wouldn’t say in the presence of a thirteen-year-old.
Play nice. Do not deliberately start arguments. Flaming, cruelty, or disrespect to others in any form will absolutely not be tolerated.
Post any excerpt of your MOTM piece that you’re inclined to share, but don’t post more than three excerpts, and keep each at 2000 words or less, please, for your own security.
Stay on topic. We’re here to write, not talk about what kind of peanut butter you buy or who you want to win the presidential election. This is a loose rule; it’s totally fine to tell us you were interrupted in your writing by a sudden, urgent craving for your favorite kind of peanut butter and you just had to go get some from the store at eleven o’clock at night. It’s okay to tell about an author whose work inspired you to write, or what music and books motivate you. A little deviation is allowable; just don’t go way off topic.
The same rules for discussion apply to excerpts you post. I’ll be a little more lax on the profanity thing here. You’re the author; if you feel the need to have a bad-mouthed character, that’s your call. But please don’t post something in which every other sentence is made up of cursing or swearing, and please sensor the viler words, particularly swearing. (You can do this either by replacing them with something milder or replacing some of the letters with asterisks.) We don’t swear to God or by Christ’s name around here, folks, and we don’t connect “damn” to God’s name. Ever. If you have to do it, don’t post it.
Violation of any of these rules will result in the removal of the offending content and a warning from an admin. If it happens again, you will be removed from the blog and no longer allowed to participate. I really don’t want to have to do that, so please, let’s have lots of fun and remember to play fair.

Welcome to Month of the Muse!

Month of the Muse is a month-long writing challenge much like NaNoWriMo and April Fools. The objective is the same--to write a given number of words in a month--but the goal is to make it a happy medium between the insanity of the one and the extreme laxity of the other. The purpose of this project is not to discount either NaNoWriMo or April Fools in any way, but simply to provide a fun and similar activity for those writers, like myself, who don't have time for NaNoWriMo's intensity right around Thanksgiving and before Christmas, but who still want a taste of the challenge, the race against time.

Month of the Muse begins on October 1 at 12:00 A.M. and ends at the same time on October 31. The objective is to write a minimum of 10000 words, but after that, you set your own word count goal; you can make it as hard or as easy as you like. I hope to provide some sort of downloadable goody for those who reach their goal, but that remains to be seen.

The writing you do for this challenge can be a continuation of something you’ve already started, but you can’t count what you’ve already done, and it must be limited to one project. That project can be anything you like--a novel or novella, an anthology of poetry or short stories, a work of fanfiction, an autobiographical work, etc.--as long as it fits into the category of fiction, poetry, fanfiction, or creative nonfiction. Commentaries and essays don't count.

This blog is a place to post related comments, questions, and thoughts; to ask for writing advice; or to show excerpts of your work to other participants if you so choose; as well as less formal conversation about the writing life (E.G. what music you listen to while you write, your own personal way of beating writer's block, etc.) and/or letting us know how your challenge piece is going for you.

There will be one pep talk, one educational writing article, and perhaps one "just for fun" goody per week during October. This project being in its infancy, I can't promise words of wisdom from published authors, only encouragement, one writer to others. If anyone would like to contribute to these articles, pep talks, or fun things, let me know by e-mailing me at gracechild1990@hotmail.com. Tell me a little about your writing experience, and do include a sample article or fun goody for consideration. Articles will be posted on this blog.
